Leadership Board Discernment & Nomination

Have you considered serving, or nominating others to serve on the WMB Church Leadership Board?

Perhaps God is nudging you to step into an increasing level of leadership at WMB. Maybe others have suggested you do so. Or perhaps you have someone in mind whom you’d like to nominate to serve on the Board. Serving on the Leadership Board is a learning and growing experience that provides much satisfaction in getting to know others, helping to move WMB toward its goals and growing in one’s faith.

Read on to learn more about what service on the Leadership Board entails and to nominate someone to serve on the Leadership Board.

Role of the Leadership Board

The Leadership Board functions as a governance board, steering, guiding and protecting WMB. They focus on what WMB should be doing to fulfil its mission and vision in our faith community, our region and around the world. They work closely with our Lead Pastor who is responsible for determining how our goals and strategic objectives will be accomplished. From September to June, members of the Leadership Board participate in eight evening meetings and two Friday evening-Saturday retreats.

Characteristics of a Board Member

Leadership Board Members are Members of WMB Church who have signed the WMB Church Covenant, and as such continue to profess Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and commit themselves to the biblical lifestyle and behaviour of a follower of Christ as outlined in the Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith and WMB’s 10 Year Disciple Resource Guide. Leadership Board candidates demonstrate the spiritual maturity and characteristics outlined by the apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 3:1-8 and Titus 1:6-9.

Skills and experience in the following areas are particularly useful on Leadership Board committees:

  • Accounting and finances

  • Strategic planning and monitoring

  • Human resources

  • Communications

  • Information technology

  • Building and facility management

  • Policies and procedures

  • Assessment and evaluation

Discernment Process

We strongly believe and have witnessed that our discernment process allows for the leading and directing of the Holy Spirit for Members to discern serving on the Leadership Board.

Members potentially joining the Board are nominated by WMB Members in the spring. They complete a comprehensive application form and are then interviewed by the Discernment Committee, whose mandate is to prayerfully discern and submit a slate of 12 Leadership Board members for approval by the Membership at the Annual General Meeting in September. New members joining the Board generally commit to a three-year term; they may remain on the Board for three additional years, and then they must step down. After one year off the Board, they may be nominated and discerned to return to the Board.

Is God calling you to join others on mission at WMB by serving on the Leadership Board? Is there someone else that you believe God could be calling to be on mission at WMB by serving on the Leadership Board?

We invite you to prayerfully discern your response to these questions.
