Ministry to Refugees: Open Homes
Open Homes is a network of people who have chosen to open their homes and hearts to refugees newly arrived in Canada. Refugee families live with an Open Homes Host for a few months as they go through Canada’s in-country refugee claimant process. Additional Open Homes partners & helpers provide a variety of secondary supports, care, and friendship.
Open Homes is designed with multiple layers of engagement to come alongside refugees in a variety of practical and relational ways. To learn more, contact our Open Homes Leadership Team
Barnabas Missions expresses Christ’s love by building relationships with the marginalized in our society, in order to help them move towards long-term well-being, to connection with Jesus and the WMB Church family, and into discipleship in our Christian faith. Barnabas teams offer practical supports, life-skills training, coaching, friendship, resources, prayer and spiritual support, and help to bridge people into the life and faith of the church.
At WMB Church, we invest in the lives of people who are currently facing financial difficulties, and who are also committed to seeking long-term wellbeing and a better financial situation for themselves. We know this can be a difficult journey, but we want to be there for participants every step of the way! We do this through regular one-to-one meetings. Trained Barnabas Coaches from WMB Church work with participants to prepare a realistic budget, set goals, offer encouragement, pray and provide financial assistance.
This program is intended for those without a church home or who already attend WMB Church.
WMB families or groups are invited to partner with a Barnabas recipient to journey alongside each other with prayer and encouragement. The Barnabas participant knows that someone is praying for them and reflects on how God is at work in their life, while those from WMB will have their faith, worldview and prayer life stretched. The potential for transformation within our church and city is huge!
Barnabas Missions is active in the Kingscourt Community and is supported by Shamrock Co-op and Waterloo Region Housing. We aim to create spaces where children and their families can experience God’s love and care through our WMB community, with opportunities to learn and grow.
Ray of Hope Community Centre (ROHCC)
WMB provides a meal once a month at the Ray of Hope Community Centre in downtown Kitchener. Six Sundays a year, in February, April, June, August, October and December, we prepare, serve and clean up the meal from 1pm – 6:30pm. Six Tuesdays, in January, March, May, July, September and November, we serve an evening meal starting at 5:30pm. ROHCC also invites volunteer groups to prepare and serve dinner meals during the week.
The community of Victoria Hills, Kitchener is home to many new Canadians and refugees. WMB’s ministry to this community includes programs for integration such as Learn English Make Friends, English as a second language bible study, monthly games/ movie nights, and Sunday Evening Celebrations with WMB’s The Dwelling Place team. Annual events include Soccer Camp and Winter Fun Day. Activities are run at the Victoria Hills Community Centre. We are thankful for the support of the City of Kitchener and the Victoria Hills Neighbourhood Association.
Soccer Camp at Victoria Hills
Each year, Barnabas Victoria Hills (formerly The Dwelling Place) runs a morning Soccer Camp at the end of August for kids entering Grades 2 to 6 in September. Instructors teach soccer skills through fun drills and games, and staff lead a character-building story time based on Biblical principles. Campers are provided with a camp t-shirt and a daily snack.

From Jesus With Love Christmas Party
From Jesus With Love (FJWL) is an opportunity to serve parents in our community who struggle with Christmas expenses by putting on a Christmas party for them with live music, food and conversation while children play games and do crafts. Gifts are generously donated by the WMB Church family, and parents select one gift for each of their pre-registered children. We’ve hosted 200 families at this event each year since 2002.
Our 2016 party will take place from 6:30-8pm on Tuesday, December 13. To find out how to pre-register to attend the party, sign up to volunteer, or donate gifts, visit the event page.
