The WMB community of disciples seeks Kingdom transformation in Kitchener-Waterloo as we engage in local expressions of our anchor causes – reaching our neighbours and people who are marginalized across each generation. Learn about each our Local Outreach ministries and opportunities to serve below.

Refugee Ministry

Individuals and families who have recently arrived in Canada and are seeking asylum through Canada’s in-country refugee claim process face many challenges. WMB Church comes alongside refugees in our community by providing housing and practical, financial and relational support through our partnership with Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support (MCRS) and Open Homes, a multi-church network of hosts and volunteers.

Open Homes

Open Homes, WMB’s primary ministry to refugees, is a network of people from WMB Church and other local churches who open their homes and hearts to refugees newly arrived in Canada. Refugee families live with an Open Homes Host for a few months as they go through Canada’s in-country refugee claimant process. Additional Open Homes partners and helpers provide a variety of secondary supports, care, and friendship.

Open Homes is designed with multiple layers of engagement to come alongside refugees in a variety of practical and relational ways. To learn more about this ministry and how you can get involved, contact our Open Homes Leadership Team.

Barnabas Missions

Barnabas Missions expresses Christ’s love by building relationships with people in our community who are marginalized in order to help them move toward long-term well-being, to connection with Jesus and the WMB Church family, and into discipleship in our Christian faith. Barnabas volunteer teams offer practical support, life-skills training, coaching, friendship, resources, prayer and spiritual support, and help to bridge people into the life and faith of the church.

Individual Supports

Through Barnabas Individual Supports, WMB Church invests in the lives of people in our community who are facing financial difficulties and who are also committed to seeking long-term well-being and a better financial situation for themselves. We know this can be a difficult journey, so we want to be there for participants every step of the way. We walk with program participants through regular one-on-one meetings where trained Barnabas Coaches from WMB Church work with participants to prepare a realistic budget, set goals, offer encouragement, pray and provide financial assistance.

This program is intended for those without a church home or who already attend WMB Church.

WMB individuals, families or Home Groups are invited to partner with Barnabas participants to journey alongside each other with prayer and encouragement. The Barnabas participant then knows that someone is praying for them and reflects on how God is at work in their life, while those from WMB will have their faith, worldview and prayer life stretched. The potential for transformation within our church and city is huge!

Local Neighbourhood Programs

Barnabas Missions offers a variety of fun, skill developing programs for children, youth and adults living in the low-income neighbourhoods surrounding WMB to facilitate the building of relationship and trust. Some of these programs include:

  • Guys’ & Girls’ Connect groups | Social groups for teens and pre-teens facilitated by adult mentors
  • Open Canvas | An open art/social group allowing participants to discover or develop artistic talent
  • DrumFit | A fitness class involving this fun new type of exercise (drumming on exercise balls)
  • Cooking Classes | Teaches kids, teens and adults how to cook quick, healthy, inexpensive meals

Have a skill you’d like to share or an idea for a new relationship building program? We’d love to hear from you!

WMB Café & Cheerful Spoon Soup Co.

The WMB Café and WMB’s Cheerful Spoon Soup Co. are not-for-profit ministries of Barnabas Missions, offering employees skills training and employable hours. Stop by the café on Sunday mornings, open 8:30am – 12:30pm (9:30-11:30am in the summer), to enjoy baked goods and hot beverages, or purchase delicious fresh and frozen Cheerful Spoon Soup to go, prepared weekly in the fall and winter months.

From Jesus with Love Christmas Party

From Jesus With Love (FJWL) is an opportunity to serve parents in our community who struggle with Christmas expenses by putting on a Christmas party for them with live music, food and conversation while children play games and do crafts. Gifts are generously donated by the WMB Church family, and parents select one gift for each of their pre-registered children. We’ve hosted 200 families at this event each year since 2002.

Our 2018 party will take place from 6:30-8pm on Tuesday, December 11. Click here to sign up to volunteer or donate a gift(s)!

Ray of Hope Community Centre (ROHCC) Partnership

WMB provides a meal once a month at the Ray of Hope Community Centre in downtown Kitchener. Six Sundays a year, in February, April, June, August, October and December, we prepare, serve and clean up the meal from 1pm – 6:30pm. Six Tuesdays, in January, March, May, July, September and November, we serve an evening meal starting at 5:30pm. ROHCC also invites volunteer groups to prepare and serve dinner meals during the week.

Barnabas Victoria Hills

Victoria Hills is a high density, high immigrant, low income neighbourhood in Kitchener. Barnabas Victoria Hills began with the launch of The Dwelling Place, WMB’s church plant in the year 2000. Today, back under the leadership of WMB Church, Barnabas Victoria Hills includes a vibrant array of programs and activities that focus on community building and discipleship.

Programs at Victoria Hills Community Centre

Most ministries of Barnabas Victoria Hills take place at Victoria Hills Community Centre. Monthly and weekly programs include:

  • Learn English Make Friends | English conversation circles for adults
Tuesdays, 9:30-11am (no childcare), and Thursdays, 7-8:30pm, with programs for kids in Preschool to Grade 6
  • Sunday Evening Celebration | Potluck with a “God conversation”
Every fourth Sunday of the month, 6-7:30pm

Soccer Camp

Each year, Barnabas Victoria Hills runs a morning Soccer Camp at the end of August for kids entering Grades 2 to 6 in September. Instructors teach soccer skills through fun drills and games, and staff lead a character-building story time based on Biblical principles. Campers are provided with a camp t-shirt and a daily snack.
