Chris StevensLead Pastor
Chris gives leadership to the WMB congregation and staff team in order to strategically advance the mission and vision of WMB Church as set by the Leadership Board. Chris is also the main Sunday teaching pastor.
Greg ReedPastor, Generational Ministries
Greg oversees all Generational Ministries to see kids and adults embrace following Jesus through helping them understand the Bible, equipping individuals and families to serve, and developing leaders for the next generation.
Shawn BrantonPastor, Worship & Arts
Shawn leads the Worship and Arts Ministry, facilitating corporate and individual expressions of Christ-centred worship during Sunday morning and other church related services.
Kim KnightDirector, Operations
Kim serves on the Executive Team and gives leadership to the WMB congregation and staff team, under the direction of the Lead Pastor. Kim’s role focuses on finance, facilities and Human Resources.
Paul ChinDirector, Missional Engagement
Paul's focus is overseeing the Missions staff (Barnabas Missions, Global Outreach and Refugee Ministry) as well as giving oversight and direction to WMB's Discover Discipleship series of courses.
Christie Penner WordenDirector, Kids Ministry
Christie oversees the discipleship of infants to Grade 6, creating spaces for kids to experience God’s love. Kids Ministry resources leaders and partners with parents to help our children learn, discover and be equipped to respond to the invitation to be a disciple of Jesus.
Brad SherkDirector, Youth Ministry
Brad oversees Junior (gr 6-8) and Senior (gr 9-12) Youth Ministries, which provides intentional spaces for youth to learn, discover and be equipped as followers of Jesus. Through its leaders, Youth Ministries helps youth follow Jesus in the context of everyday life and to be equipped for serving others.
Mike BrnjasDirector, Young Adults Ministry
Mike disciples our community of young adults (roughly ages 18-25) as they navigate that formative transition from high school to adulthood.
Gareth GoossenPastor, Seniors Ministry
Gareth provides overall leadership to WMB’s Seniors Ministry and outreach to retirees (ages 60+), including the equipping of lay leaders for ministry inside and outside the doors of the church.
Sarah WhytePastor, Home Groups
Sarah leads WMB’s Home Groups Ministry, discipling adults by forming, growing and multiplying WMB Home Groups that embody the gospel of Jesus Christ and centre on WMB's integrated discipleship plan, the characteristics of a 10-Year Disciple and key biblical habits for living as disciples of Jesus in today's contemporary culture.
Sarah also provides congregational direction and inspiration through her preaching, which she does on a regular basis, about every six weeks.
Michelle KnowlesDirector, Global Outreach
Michelle oversees Global Outreach Missions (GO) which encompasses all of WMB’s globally-oriented mission programs, trips, and partnerships in various parts of the world, by mobilizing people and resources for both short and long term missions.
Mary Ellen TierneyDirector, Barnabas Victoria Hills
Mary Ellen expresses Christ’s love through Barnabas Missions by building relationships with the marginalized in Victoria Hills. Barnabas Victoria Hills offers practical supports, friendship, resources, prayer and spiritual support, and helps to bridge people into the life and faith of the church.
Stefanie MacGregorDirector, Barnabas Local Outreach
Stefanie expresses Christ’s love through Barnabas Missions by building relationships with the marginalized in selected neighbourhoods of Waterloo. Stefanie leads Barnabas teams that offer life-skills training, coaching, friendship, resources, kids programs, prayer and spiritual support, and help to bridge people into the life and faith of the church.
Wayne PortyPastor, Barnabas Individual Supports
Wayne expresses Christ’s love through Barnabas Missions by building relationships with the marginalized in our cities, in order to help them move towards long-term well-being. Wayne offers practical supports, life-skills training, coaching, friendship, resources, prayer and spiritual support, and helps to bridge people into the life and faith of the church.
Renée SerezIntern, Barnabas Missions
As part of her education, Renée is learning about local outreach through practical experience as she partners with our Barnabas Missions team in their ministries.
Lisa MatthewsDirector, Administration
Lisa leads and gives direction to overall office operations and use of the church facility. She provides administrative support to various ministries and is the Executive Assistant to Lead Pastor Chris Stevens.
Ann JobesOffice Administrator
Ann provides administrative support to various ministries. She is also the friendly face and voice who greets our many weekly visitors and callers.
Amanda processes the daily bookkeeping and supports our pastors and directors in many ways.
Deanna MannDirector, Communications
Deanna facilitates and oversees our channels of communication within WMB Church and beyond.
Shannon oversees the repairs and maintenance of our facility, inside and out.
Adam KnowlesC2C Church Planting Apprentice
Through C2C/Multiply (the Canadian MB Conference's church planting ministry), Adam is becoming equipped for church planting through a year-long apprenticeship at WMB, working under the supervision of Lead Pastor Chris Stevens.
Karen WestPastor Emeritus
After 21 years on staff at WMB, Karen has retired from her full-time paid position. She now works in a volunteer role, mentoring our pastoral team, working with the Senior Leadership Team on strategic initiatives and preaching occasionally.
The WMB Leadership Board (LB) serves the church in a governance role to ensure that we fulfill our Mission and Vision statements, adhere to our operating by-laws and policies and to provide accountability on behalf of church members. The LB works co-operatively with the Lead Pastor to ensure we are financially viable, strategically oriented with our goals and striving towards the mission God has given us as a congregation.
Leadership Board members are first nominated by the congregation, then go through a selection process to confirm they have the required attributes. Finally, the LB is elected by members at our annual general meeting. Meet our current Board below. Terry ShuhLeadership Board Chair
Terry’s ministry experiences include ushering, leading small groups, mentoring, church administration, serving on the Board in previous terms, and serving on the provincial MB conference board. Terry recently retired from her full-time vocation and is excited to serve the church in this next season of ministry and mission.
Paul AtkinsonLeadership Board
Paul’s first career was in education. Upon retirement, he served at the church in several ways, most recently as Pastor of Administration. Paul has been involved in leading Dinner Theatre, leading Home Groups, serving on the Eat, Connect + Learn team, the Global Outreach Team and as an usher. He has also participated in a number of short-term mission trips. He is excited about what is happening at WMB and what the future holds for us.
Doris BalcarrasLeadership Board
Doris is a registered nurse and lactation consultant at Grand River Hospital. Over the years, she has served on the Leadership Board, been actively involved on several pastoral search and pastoral support teams, and has participated in Short Term Missions and Home Group ministries. Doris is passionate about outreach ministries at WMB Church and in our community.
Kathy BirdLeadership Board
Kathy is a director of underwriting research and innovation for a local insurance company. She is passionate about helping people connect into the WMB community through hospitality at WMB events like Dinner Theatre, Eat Connect + Learn, and summer barbecues. She leads the Bethlehem Baskets ministry each Christmas season.
Anita BolesLeadership Board
Anita is the Chief Financial & Operations Officer at Emmanuel Bible College. She and her family have been part of the WMB community for over 20 years. She has served in a variety of ways including teaching Sunday school, leading small groups, leading worship, going on mission trips, and mentoring couples as they prepare for marriage. She has always been passionate about community, but especially since experiencing the “hands and feet of Jesus” through the WMB Church family during her husband, Duane’s journey with brain cancer and since his death. Anita is honoured to be serving on the Board and to be a part of the deeper call that God is stirring among us.
Sospeter GatobuLeadership Board
Sospeter has worked with an international development organization as the communication officer for Africa, as well as the resource mobilization director of the Bible Society of Kenya. Presently, Sospeter is a project manager/research associate at the University of Waterloo. Sospeter is passionate about sharing his faith and making the gospel real to people around him.
Jeff HorstLeadership Board
God has put a heart for missions in both Jeff and his wife, Bonita Eby. Serving and community began with Dinner Theatre years ago and now he enjoys being on a worship band, doing soccer ministry and volunteering where needed.
Tammy MillerLeadership Board
Tammy’s current employment has her overseeing operations for an international Christian charitable organization. She has enjoyed volunteering in various capacities over her almost 20 years at WMB, including coordinating the offering count team and participating in Kids Ministry, Barnabas Missions programs and ushering. She is excited to serve on the Leadership Board at this pivotal time in WMB’s history.
Steve NewmanLeadership Board
Steve leads the Estate and Trust Services business in Ontario and Atlantic Canada for a major Canadian bank. Over the years he’s been involved in WMB’s outreach ministries like Dinner Theatre, Community BBQs, From Jesus with Love, Bethlehem Baskets and Eat-Connect-Learn. He is passionate about understanding and pursuing God’s will for his life and being part of a community that actively discerns how God wants them to make “more and better disciples.”
Chad RoesLeadership Board
Chad is passionate about growing the next generation of leaders in the church through serving in Kids Ministry as one of the teachers of the Grade 5 class. He also has the privilege of serving at WMB through Home Group leadership and the opportunity to volunteer at events like From Jesus With Love. Professionally, Chad works in the technology sector.
Steve SpenlerLeadership Board
Steve's ministry experiences include ushering, leading a small group and a Guys Connect group through Barnabas Missions, and serving at Eat, Connect + Learn. Steve graduated from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University and has worked in various engineering and project management roles within the technology sector. He has two sons in university and a spouse working in the healthcare sector. Steve looks forward to new opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus as WMB promotes all aspects of following God.
Paul ThompsonLeadership Board Treasurer
Paul believes that the local church plays an important role in discipling people in their journey to and with Jesus, and it's a key vehicle to reaching and caring for our community. Because of this, and his leadership experience, he has been engaged in a Leadership Board role for many years. After 20 years working with a team to build a listed medical device company based in Europe, he now spends his time impacting people through investing, advising and board directorships, primarily in the technology start-up community in Waterloo Region. He also enjoys mentoring young business leaders who want to bring Jesus’ example of servant leadership into their careers. Paul and his wife, Gillian, have attended WMB since 2005. They have four adult children.
